Awakening

Woke up early this morning. Since it's February, I thought I'd pull out volume 2 of the Collectanea and find a quote. So here goes:

"It is essential to know whether one is for the greater number or for the choice few." — Andre Gide, Journals, IV, p. 207, 1943.

Seems like an appropriate sentiment as we are entering an era of perpetual politicking.

  1. The choice few, among whom one hopes to be numbered...

  2. Depends on your point of view. Does one consider himself among the greater number, or does one consider himself one of the choice few? It's all in the mind of the person deciding after all. I have to ask myself the question, "who is it essential to"? Another quote by Andre is somewhat related, "Be faithful to that which exists nowhere but in yourself - and thus make yourself indispensable".
